Hal ini menciptakan binatang jenis rodentia tersebut gampang dibawa-bawa, gampang ditangani (dikontrol) alasannya yaitu jinak, sehingga banyak penggemar untuk menjamah binatang ini sebagai binatang peliharaan kesayangan dan sering juga dijadikan binatang coba dalam suatu penelitian.

Hewan ini berasal dari bab utara yaitu, Siberia, Eropa Tengah, Mongolia, Tiongkok Utara sampai Korea. Serta juga berasal dari tempat bab Selatan yaitu, Suriah sampai Pakistan. Hamster berkembang biak biasanya didaerah perbatasan padang pasir, bukit pasir, kaki gunung, lembah bersungai, padang rumput, dataran rendah yang berbatu dan bersemak semak, diladang tanam dll.
